HOPE (Sep 5): Laurence W. Hobbs, Sr., 71, of Hope, died Tuesday, Sept. 4,
2007 at his daughter's home in Glenburn. Born in Camden on April 25, 1936,
he was the son of Roy K.
and Helen Freida (Young) Hobbs of Hope. He attended Camden High School and
moved to Florida where he served in the U.S. Army becoming a paratrooper
with the Army's 82nd airborne division. Upon leaving the military, he lived
in New York where he managed various restaurants eventually owning his own
restaurant in Vermont. Larry was a tri-state real estate broker in Maine,
New Hampshire and Vermont and was a licensed Notary for many years. Larry
will be remembered as a true mountain man and outdoorsman. He was a lifetime
member of the National Rifle Association.
In 1987, he returned to Maine and settled in Hope where he was active with town affairs.
Surviving is his wife, Mary (Carr) Hobbs; one son, Laurence W. Hobbs, Jr.; four daughters, Kathy Reeves of Glenburn; Cheryl Price of Orland; Crystal Ayer of Bucksport; and Laurel Beal of Dixmont; eighteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; a niece, Michelle McBride. He was predeceased by his brother, Harville "Elston" Hobbs who died Oct. 11, 2005.
The funeral service will be 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 7, 2007 at the South Hope Community Church, 142 Main Street (Rt. 17), South Hope with Pastor Norman Finnemore officiating.Burial will follow in the Hope Grove Cemetery, Hatchet Mountain Rd., Hope.
