HOPE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
April 18, 2017
Our April 18, 2017 meeting was called to order by President Donovan Bowley at 7:05 P.M. Those members present were: Donovan Bowley, Gwen Brodis, Ann Leadbetter, Bob Appleby, Mary Ireland, Ron Smith, David Hall, Sydney Hall, Florance Merrifield, Juanita Hunt, Bill Borch, Marie Berry, and Linda Hillgrove. Guests attending were: Speakers Sophia Vigue and Josh McPhail; John Vigue, Ruth Winchenbach, Marie Powers, Brianna Carleton, Dana Winchenbach, Heidi Timmermann, Lyn Hayward, Shirley Hayward, Deborah Crabtree, John Crabtree, Rita Grinnell Elliott, and Claire Crabtree Frye.
SECRETARY’S REPORT: The December 2016 Minutes were summarized by Secretary, Linda Hillgrove, which were unanimously accepted.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer, Gwen Brodis, reported (awaiting that report)
OLD BUSINESS: Volunteers are still needed to help transcribe the Town Clerk’s Report, 1804-1848.
NEW BUSINESS: A moment of silence was observed due to the passing of Obed Hart and Hope Chase. We have received photos from the Irving Keene Memorial by Willis Keene, which can be found on the web site. Our HHS Town Report has been submitted. Check with Marie Berry, Gwen or Donovan to sign up for the Annual Clean Up. We have received two pictures of an old school house which is in question of being located in Hope.
Refreshments were provided by Ann Leadbetter and Gwen Brodis. Juanita Hunt will provide refreshments in May. Volunteers are needed to provide refreshments for future meetings so let Gwen know if you are available.
Donovan has acquired “Maine’s Museums, Art & Oddities & Artifacts” by Janet Mendelsohn; and “The Great Migration Directory 1620-164” which is available at the HHS home. Marie Berry has volunteered to open the HHS home on the first Friday in July 7, August 4 and September 1 from 11-3 p.m. Regular hours open are Mondays 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
PROGRAM CHAIR: Program Chair, Ann Leadbetter, introduced student, Sophia Vigue and her teacher, Josh McPhail from the St George School. Sophia interviewed and filmed 95 year old Philip Crabtree, who spoke of his school years at South Hope School. We plan to have this informative and entertaining video on the HHS web site.
