HOPE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

MINUTES for April, 16, 2019

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 P.M. by President, Juanita Hunt. Those attending were: Gwen Brodis, Ann Leadbetter, Marie Berry, Donovan Bowley, Ron Smith, Emily saladino, Peter Saladino, Cynthia DellaPenna, Jim DellaPenna, Bill Jones, Judith Jones, Bob Appleby, Florance Merrifield, Mary Ireland, Linda Hillgrove; Guests were Beth Gindel and Richard Morgan. Speaker of the evening was David Spahr.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: Secretary, Linda Hillgrove, summarized the Minutes for December 11, 2018 which were unanimously accepted.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer, Gwen Brodis, presented the Treasurer’s report for the past four months. Receipts were: Income from November 14, 2018 to March 31, 2019 of $1,430.64; Expenses: $1,876.26; Balance in Savings: $17,589.49 with a Balance in Checking: $445.57 which was unanimously accepted.

OLD BUSINESS: Emily Saladino updated information on the Traveling Trunk which will be going to Hope Elementary School. She stressed the importance of young people learning about the past and how their ancestors worked and played and the appliances they used. Emily suggested that members of HHS discover ways to bring in the younger people to learn and appreciate Hope’s history.

Cindy DellaPenna has completed the proofing of most of the sections and indexed over half of the sections. There are three sections remaining to be transcribed. Bob Appleby will put the Town Report onto the HHS website when completed. When completed, the Town Clerk’s report will be returned to Harvard University. Thank you to all who contributed to the transcription process.

We need volunteers to meet and greet guests on Mondays from 9 A.M. to Noon. Donovan and Gwen will be there verifying and cataloging items during those hours. Contact Juanita, Gwen or Cynthia if you wish to volunteer.

NEW BUSINESS: Juanita requested that an Executive meeting take place to outline office and committee responsibilities and update the HHS By-Laws. Beth Gindel is the new Town Sexton caring for Hope Cemetery and would like to involve HHS. Thank you to Ron Smith and Bill Jones for repairing and smoothing the potholes in the HHS parking lot and also doing roadside bottle collections.

Estimates are needed regarding the repair and shingling of the HHS roof. Florance Merrifield has been busy all winter knotting and sewing for upcoming fund raising events. She donated a cow bell and an ice chisel.

WEBMASTER: Webmaster, Bob Appleby, gave an update regarding an increase of people viewing our website.



Thank you to Donovan for making and distributing posters. We decided to post notices of our meetings in the Free Press, Facebook and Village Soup. Juanita said she would do post notices on Facebook.

Ann Leadbetter introduced David Spahr who spoke about mushroom hunting and how to identify edible mushrooms by the shape, color, and the trees they grow on.

Thank to Ann Leadbetter and Juanita Hunt who provided refreshments for this meeting. Barbara Ludwig and Linda Hillgrove will provide refreshments for our May historical Meeting.

The speaker for the May 21, 2019 7 P.M. will be Auctioneer, Lawrence Trueman, of St. George, speaking of “Treasure Hunting”.
