HOPE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

MINUTES FOR October 17, 2017

The meeting was called to order by President Donovan Bowley at 7:05 P.M. Those present were: Donovan Bowley, Gwen Brodis, Ann Leadbetter, Bob Appleby, Mary Ireland, Barbara Ludwig, Bill Jones, Judith Jones, Bradley Boyd, Lorinda Boyd, Florance Hastings, Ron Smith, Nancy Ford, Marie Berry, Cindy Bella Penna, Diane Sprowl and Linda Hillgrove. Guests were: Vickie Harriman, Peter Duffy, Emily Saladin, Peter Saladino, Rosie Gerry, Jerry and Vicki Sawyer, Jamie Metcalfe, Briar Fishman and Karen Warner.

A moment of silence was given for remembrance of members no longer with us.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR: Some gifts from Members and Friends were an anonymous gift of Olive Noyes photos and notes; clippings, and photos from the Kleene family; Kitchen implements from Janice (Brown) Baxstrom; a crystal vase and pitcher set and under bed pot from Betty Lou Richards; and photos from Willis Keene.

Transcriptions of portions of the Town Clerk’s Record Book and School District No.2 are being edited; more sections of the Town Clerk’s book are available to transcribe.

Speakers from November 2016 included Michael Douglas and Hannah on Camp Bishopwood; in April 2017 Sophia Vigue, with her teacher, John McPhail, presented her interview with Philip Crabtree reminiscing on the old South Hope School. In May we had a roundtable conversation with Bob Hall, Bill Jones and Donovan Bowley on Old Roads in Hope; David Edwards spoke to us in June on Beekeeping; July meeting saw Hank Lunn re-enacting Abiel Briggs, participant on Arnold’s Kennebec Expedition to capture Quebec; in August Kerry Hardy discussed his continuing work on old roads from Indian trails to use of LiDAR in tracing old roads and habitations. Our September meeting was to have been a field trip to Bishopwood, but it had to be postponed.

Our exhibit this past year was Relics, Collections, Places and Memories, photographs by our member John Boeckeler. We thank John and are now preparing a new exhibit from our archives.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: Secretary, Linda Hillgrove, read the September Minutes which was unanimously accepted.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer, Gwen Brodis, reported Total Expenses of $5,405.52; Balance on Hand: Savings: $9,906.54; Checking: $443.81 for a Total of $10,350.35.

NEW BUSINESS: The Nominating Committee announced Officers for 2018 who will be Donovan Bowley, President; Mary Ireland nominated Cindy Della Penna for Vice President which was moved and seconded; Gwen Brodis, Treasurer; Linda Hillgrove, Secretary and Ann Leadbetter, Program Chairperson.

Scott McIntyre has agreed to be on the Building Committee which will be reconstituted.

The Annual Appeals Letter will be coming out soon.

Marie Berry will be at the HHS home on Saturday, October 21st and 28th from 9:00 A.M. to 1 P.M. to answer inquiries, give tours and have her delicious pies for sale.

UPCOMING EVENTS: On Election Day, November 7th we will hold a Bake Sale and Benefit Raffle of a king size quilt made by Florance Merrifield, at the Hope Town Office. Tickets are one for a dollar or six for five dollars. The Raffle will be drawn at the end of voting.

PROGRAM CHAIR: Ann Leadbetter, Program Chairperson, introduced Vickie Harriman and the Come Spring Players who performed a skit written by Peter Duffy around Ben Ames Williams novel, Come Spring.

 The November 21st meeting will be a roundtable remembrance of long time Hope resident, Ephraim Baird at 7 P.M. at the HHS home.
